PET & the environment

The popularity of PET packaging is due to the durability of the material in combination with its aesthetics (transparency). But PET also has many environmental benefits as compared to other packaging materials. PET is lightweight and durable (practically unbreakable) and the contents held by PET packaging are well protected. In its production, PET is also a lot more sustainable than similar packaging materials. PET wins, thanks to its lower energy consumption and lower CO2 emissions. Thanks to its light weight, PET packaging also offers environmental benefits during transport.

PET is recyclable

PET packaging is fully recyclable. PET bottles are brought from collection centres to a recycling facility to be recycled. To make the transport as sustainable and as efficient as possible, the PET bottles are pressed into bales and ground into tiny pieces at a recycling facility. The PET flakes are then washed and dried. With computer technology, the flakes are sorted by colour and processed into granulated material with extruders.

Recycled PET is given a new life

Recycled PET is used to make new PET bottles, both food and non-food, carpets, T-shirts, underwear, shoes, cushion filling, sleeping bags, winter coats, foil, car bumpers, car door panels and even car tyres.

The environmental benefits of PET
